A portion of every single purchase is donated to African LEAF, a local charity dedicated to creating lasting change for disadvantaged children.
African LEAF was established by a small committed group of Byron Shire people in 2004 with the aim to Love, Educate, Acknowledge and Feed orphaned, abandoned, vulnerable and abused children in Kenya in the belief that every child deserves an opportunity to achieve their full potential in life.
AIMS: To help orphaned and vulnerable children from any tribe, religion or region – providing access to the kind of education, food and housing we expect for our own children. - To nurture these children to help them become valuable members of their communities and country.
Since 2007, African LEAF has sponsored 20 orphaned and vulnerable children from the Kawangware Slum, arranging for them to attend the Mbagathi Rudolf Steiner Farm School as full-time boarders until the end of year 9 and then into boarding high schools.
In addition, Africal LEAF funds native Kenyans to complete teacher training courses. One such teacher has since started the Kalama Kindergarten situated on community land. She currently has 34 children aged 2 1/2 to 4 years, 5 days a week. African LEAF has also assisted this struggling rural kindergarten in Kalama with a grant to purchase:
- Outside play equipment and garden equipment
- Paper, crayons and craft materials
- Various toys and play items
African LEAF has also assisted the Familia Moja Children's Home by contributing to their latest project, the building of a bakery. This is the first step in what should be an ongoing relationship with Familia Moja.
